OPEI's Internet Survey Gains Consumer Feedback On Cleaner Engines Alexandria, VA June 1998 - Generally favorable attitudes were indicated toward new cleaner running engines from those who participated in the Outdoor Power Equipment Institutes's (OPEI) monthly Internet survey for Apri. This new survey has been publicized in both trade and consumer press and on OPEI's web site. The first question was "Are you aware that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has mandated signifigant emission reductions for small gas powered engines used on lawn mowers and other equipment manufactured after 1997?" 76% responded 'yes'. Further, over 67% of those who said they would pay more for cleaner engines said they would pay between $20 and $50 more. The survey is a six month pilot study that will post two different research questions, including demographic questions, each month through September 1998 on OPEI's Internet web site (opei.mow.org). The survey is open to all visitors to this site. As an incentive to participate, respondents are eligible to win one of five $100 cash prizes. Dennis Dix, OPEI President and CEO said, "We're posting this random survey to gain as many options as we can from those who visit our web site daily. And, we're excited about the potential for this monthly survey for learning more about their interest and knowledge of outdoor power equipment." One hundred Internet users responded to April's questions. A majority of these were homeowners with a garden who own at least one type of outdoor power equipment, primarily walk-behind mowers. According to Dr. Mark Traylor, President of National Market Measures, Inc., a Cleveland, Ohio based market research firm, April's results are statistically significant with a standard error of plus or minus 10% at the 95% confidence level. The six month survey is projected to generate a growing number of respondents which would increase the statistical precision over time. "Internet based consumer surveys can be helpful, especially when you want to learn more about the demographic profiles of today's Internet user", said Traylor. OPEI is a trade association whose membership is primarily composed of U.S. manufacturers of lawn and garden maintenance products, components and attachment supplies, as well as industry related services. OPEI's domestic members manufacture in excess of 95% of the U.S. consumer retail market for gas and electric powered lawn and garden maintenance products. ## |
