Shipments Of Key Lawn and Garden Products Show Overall Increase For Model Year 1998

Alexandria, VA November 1998 - Twelve month industry shipments of key lawn and garden products increased overall in the 1998 model year according to estimates by the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI). All product categories showed increases for model year with total shipments at 7,704,740 units, an increase of approximately 5% from 1997 model year. All riding units combined were up by 5% with selected riding products increasing anywhere from 3 to 17%. Walk-behind mowers increased 5% to 5,829,200 units and walk-behind tillers showed a gain of 15% to 359,760 units. The model year for these products was September 1, 1997 through August 31, 1998 and the industry estimates represent shipments destined to U.S markets only.

OPEI is a trade association whose membership is primarily composed of U.S. manufacturers of lawn and garden maintenance products, components and attachment supplies, as well as industry related services. OPEI's domestic members manufacture in excess of 95% of the U.S. consumer retail market for gas and electric powered lawn and garden maintenance products.
