Commercial Turf Care Equipment Forecast Shows Slight Decrease In 1999

Alexandria, VA December 1998 - The forecast for Commercial Turf Care Equipment, issued by the Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI), shows that shipments of all types of commercial riding mowers and intermediate walk-behind mowers will decrease slightly in 1999. For 1999, riders will decrease .3% to 64,933 units and intermediate walk-behinds will decrease 3.2% to 48,166 units. An upturn in 2000 is expected with riders showing a 5% gain and intermediate walk-behinds gaining almost 1%.

These estimates represent shipments destined for U.S. markets only. The model year for these products runs from September through August. For example, forecasts for the 1999 model year refer to units shipped between September 1, 1998 and August 31, 1999.

The OPEI Commercial Turf Forecast is prepard by Association Research, Inc. The forecast is compiled on a quarterly basis.

OPEI is a trade association whose membership is primarily composed of U.S. manufacturers of lawn and garden maintenance products, components and attachment supplies, as well as industry related services. OPEI's domestic members manufacture in excess of 95% of the U.S. consumer retail market for gas and electric powered lawn and garden maintenance products.
