Slow Down In Economy May Affect Outdoor Power Equipment in 1999 and 2000

Alexandria, VA December 1998 - The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) Economic Forecast for consumer type equipment, revised in November 1998 shows a downturn in all product categories for 1999 and 2000. Following a strong 1998 model year (September 1, 1997 - August 31,1998) performance for all outdoor power equipment, a potential slump in housing for 1999 and stabilization of consumer sentiment could reduce shipments of products. Shipments of all products in 1999 show some decline compared to 1998 levels with the year 2000 showing slight recovery over 1999.

The current forecast for model year 1999 is September 1, 1998 - August 31, 1999 and for model year 2000, September 1, 1999 - August 31, 2000. OPEI's Economic Forecast for the outdoor power equipment industry is prepared by Association Research, Inc. The forecast is complied and released on a quarterly basis.

OPEI is a trade association whose membership is primarily composed of U.S. manufacturers of powered lawn and garden maintenance products, components and attachment supplies, as well as industry related services. OPEI's domestic members manufacture in excess of 95% of the U.S. consumer retail market for gas and electric powered lawn and garden supplies.
