Proposed Revisions To ANSI Lawnmower Standard Available For Comment

Alexandria, VA, September 11, 2000 --- The Outdoor Power Equipment Institute (OPEI) has formally sent to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) for public review, comment and canvass review proposed revisions to the 1998 Lawnmower Standard (ANSI B71.1 - 1998). As part of the ANSI process, ANSI requires a public review period for the rev isions, which anyone may comment on the document.

Anyone who wishes to review and comment on the revisions should contact John F. Liskey, Director of Statistical and Technical Services, at 703-549-7600. The comment period for review ends December 18, 2000.

The B71.1 standard covers safety specifications for various types of mowers: (a) reel and rotary walk-behind power lawn mowers, (b) reel and rotary ride-on power lawnmowers, (c) ride-on power lawn tractors with mower attachments, (d) ride-on power lawn and garden tractors with mower attachments, and (e) lever steer ride-on mowers. The standard i s intended to apply to products specifically intended as consumer products for the personal use of a consumer around a house. Major proposed revisions to the standard include revised stability requirements, additional safety pictorials and numerous other changes.

OPEI is a trade association whose membership is primarily composed of U.S. manufacturers of powered lawn and garden maintenance products, components and attachment supplies, as well as industry-related services. OPEI's domestic members manufacture in excess of 95% of the U.S. consumer retail market for gas and electric powered lawn and garden maintenance products.
